THE MAD JOURNEY

MAD2Run is a group of ordinary South Africans using our feet for a great feat! This is a unique annual fundraising event, in which a group of selfless individuals epically run from Johannesburg to Cape Town (1520km in total) in just 7 days! It’s a 24-hour relay-style running adventure, all in support of MAD Leadership Foundation.

THE MAD2RUN STORY

This event was initiated in 2012, when Shaun Raaff decided that it was time to be proactive and make a positive contribution to his much-loved country, South Africa. After watching an inspirational talk given by Braam Malherbe (who ran across the great wall of China in aid of the charity Miles for Smiles). He got home, rather emotional, and immediately sent out an email to all of his friends and invited them around for an “emergency braai”. He was able to convince his close friends that they needed to do something meaningful in their lives. The maddest suggestion – let’s run to Cape Town!

THE ROAD LESS TRAVELED – HOW WE JOURNEY

The entire MAD2Run team is sectioned into three groups of four runners, per running shift. These groups alternate throughout the week so almost everyone in the team gets to run together at some point. Each shift covers 80km over which each runner is responsible for running 20km. There are a lot of intricate logistics involved, but as a fundamental running requirement, each runner is expected to run a minimum of 20km per day/140km in the week. The record however, held by Tim Page (2014) is 260km for the week – you can’t get more dedicated than that!

WHY MAD2RUN?

In the MAD Leadership Foundation, a great cause was found to put all of our efforts behind. The team was immediately moved by the inspiring work of this great education-based organisation. There exists a shared vision and passion between MAD Leadership Foundation and ourselves, in that we believe education to be the best way of improving one’s standing in life, which has a substantial and sustainable impact on the holistic betterment of society.

ALONG THE WAY

We are an ever-expanding group of ordinary South Africans with the drive to make a difference by using our feet for a great feat! Each year new groups of runners will take on this cross-country challenge, with 60 runners having taken part since the inaugural run in 2014. Along with the momentous support from our fellow countrymen and sponsors we have raised a total of R2 025 000 for MAD Leadership Foundation to date.

MAD2Run 2017

Two times the gees, two times the difference! Expanding to two teams, one from JHB and one from CT – these runners and supporters from across the country gave all they had to make a difference to their country!

MAD2Run 2016

Onward and upward: the passion and enthusiasm that these 12 young runners embodied in 2016 has breathed a tangible energy into the MAD2Run movement.

MAD2Run 2015

The year that manifested the success of the MAD2Run dream and entrenched the realisation that nothing is impossible!

MAD2Run 2014

An unrealistic dream was created from an unrelenting desire to make a difference in South Africa. The 12 runners and their support crew believed in their dream enough to make it a reality!

MAD2RUN 2018

The forthcoming event will take place from the 23rd March – 30th March 2018 and finish with the Old Mutual Two Oceans Half Marathon on the 31st March 2018.

Applications for the MAD2Run Team ’18 are NOW CLOSED, as we have reached capacity! Thank you for your support!

MAD2RUN 2019 APPLICATION FORM

Be the difference. Join the movement.

Apply for a journey of a lifetime!

12 - 19 April 2019

We are currently looking for the next group of motivated MADsters to join the movement!
If you are "gees-ed" beyond measure and ready to make a difference, please apply below.

Applications close on 30 June 2018.

Please confirm you understand the following expectations:

- The entire MAD2Run team is sectioned into three groups of four runners, per running shift.
- There are three running shifts per day; with each shift covering 80km in roughly 8 hours.
- Each runner is responsible for running a minimum of 20km per shift.
- These groups alternate throughout the week, so almost everyone on the team gets to run together at some point.

*

and these expectations:

Throughout the year leading up to MAD2Run, you will be expected to work with the team to fundraise for the MAD2Run journey from Johannesburg to Cape Town to raise as many funds as you can for MAD Leadership Foundation.

All fundraising events/activities and sponsorships are the responsibility of the MAD2Run team.*

*

Understanding the supporter role:

Each running team requires a supporter to help them along the journey. Essentially you become a 'third' teammate and are the one who gets the runners across the finish line! You would need to be highly organised and happy to operate with little sleep and lots of gees. During the lead up to the run, you have the same responsibilities as everyone else regarding fundraising; however, the role is slightly different on the road as you will be responsible for the following:

1) Base camps (room allocations, bags in and out, timings of arrival and departure)
2) Driving the pace vehicle (following the runners) and/or the shuttle vehicles (moving runners between shifts)
3) Running the Old Mutual Two Oceans Half Marathon (21km) on the 20th of April 2019.

And on the road, as the supporter or third runner, you can run as much or as little as you want to!
