Finding a More Focused Way to Serve
For four years, a MAD Leadership Foundation scholar worked alongside his community through food drives, clothing collections and sanitary pad distribution initiatives. The work addressed immediate needs, but over time one challenge continued to stand out: many girls were still missing opportunities because period poverty, limited menstrual health education and a lack of psychosocial support remained barriers to their wellbeing and education.
Rather than expanding existing programmes, Kutlwano Phumudi chose a different direction.
Experience and leadership skills gained from his previous organisation, where he had served as Co-Founder and Youth Chairperson, provided a strong foundation for launching his own initiative, Flow with Dignity Foundation, focused specifically on menstrual health education and support for young girls in underserved communities.
Building on lessons learned through years of community outreach, the foundation is working to improve access to sanitary products, strengthen menstrual health education and create supportive environments where girls can participate fully in school and community life.
The initiative is currently operating at community level while establishing partnerships that will support its next phase of growth. Plans include expanding sanitary pad distribution, developing educational booklets, introducing school-based support programmes and launching youth leadership and mental wellness initiatives.
Looking ahead, the focus is on building sustainable partnerships with schools, community organisations and supporters who can help strengthen long-term impact. Alongside expanding menstrual health programmes, the foundation also aims to grow its community food relief initiatives and create opportunities for more young women to access education, support and leadership development. Reflecting on the decision that shaped this next chapter, Kutlwano says:
I realised that if I wanted to give girls the focused support they deserved, I needed to build something dedicated to their dignity, health and future.
Over the past year, that vision has gained significant momentum.
