Teaching South Africa’s Next Generation to Make Better Money Decisions
As a MAD Leadership Foundation Alum, Danei has always believed that education should prepare young people for life, not just for exams.
While financial decisions shape almost every aspect of adulthood, millions of young people leave school without the knowledge or confidence to manage money well. The consequences are far-reaching, contributing to debt, financial insecurity and limited economic opportunity.
Rather than accepting this as inevitable, Danei chose to help change it.
As Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer of Fintr, she oversees the operational heart of the business, leading finance, logistics, product management and customer success. Together with her team, she is building practical tools that help schools and parents teach children the financial habits, behaviours and decision-making skills that traditional education often overlooks.
We’re building tools that help children develop healthy money mindsets, behaviours and habits from a young age.
Over the past year, that vision has gained significant momentum.
Fintr4Schools, the organisation’s digital learning platform, has grown from one paying school to five, while maintaining a 100% client retention rate. Its flagship educational board game, FinMaster, has sold more than 500 copies and is now available through Takealot, Exclusive Books and 54 retail stores across South Africa. Meanwhile, the Mini Millionaires newsletter has grown from a new idea into a community of nearly 2 000 parents who receive practical guidance on raising financially confident children.
For Danei, however, growth is measured by more than just numbers.
Parents regularly share how playing FinMaster has changed conversations about money at home and influenced the financial decisions they make as a family. Those stories reinforce the reason the business exists: helping children develop healthy financial habits early in life, with the potential to shape their futures for years to come.
Leadership has also required difficult decisions.
During a large-scale financial literacy programme in Gauteng, unforeseen challenges placed significant strain on both the project and the business. Faced with mounting costs and increasing pressure on her team, Danei made the difficult decision to set clear boundaries with project funders rather than continue beyond the organisation’s capacity. It was a decision that protected both the sustainability of the business and the wellbeing of the people behind it.
One of the hardest lessons in leadership was learning that protecting your people and your purpose sometimes means knowing when to draw a boundary.
Today, Fintr has expanded its reach nationally, working with schools across South Africa, including online schools and a partner school in Lesotho. Discussions are underway with major school groups and financial institutions as the organisation works towards reaching more schools and making financial literacy accessible to many more young people.
As a MAD alum, Danei also sees her own journey as part of something bigger. She hopes to strengthen connections between entrepreneurs within the MAD community, sharing knowledge, opening opportunities and helping others grow ventures that create meaningful social impact.
Her vision is simple but ambitious: a future where every child has the knowledge, confidence and tools to make wise financial decisions long before they enter adulthood.
